FAQ
Causes of Mold Damage in your HomeAny damp and poorly ventilated area can become susceptible to mold contamination. Mold spores are in everywhere in the environment and once a few spores find an ideal breeding ground it will multiply rapidly.
Hence proper maintenance of your property is essential to avoid costly remediation efforts once mold contamination happens. While inclement weather incidents like hurricane winds and storms and flooding are common in the gulf coast region, there are several other more mundane ways that moisture can penetrate your home.
Following are a list of common causes that bring moisture into your home allowing for mold to settle and spread.
Poor landscaping
It is important that the landscaping is done in such a way that water is drawn away from the house. Poorly done or lack of landscaping can result in water pooling near critical points around the house which in turn provides the moisture leaking into the property. It happens quite often that the grade of the landscaping is high causing the water to pool around the house.
Defective sprinkler system
The direction of the sprinkler heads are important. During gardening or otherwise, the sprinkler head can be damaged or turned causing it to spray onto the building instead of the plant beds. This will cause pooling and moisture contamination.
Vegetation contact
While having beautiful foliage and trees around the house is very much desired, it is essential to keep in check how such vegetation is interacting with the property. Very close proximity or even touch the property becomes a point where water will accumulate.
Poor drainage
Water drainage around the foundation and exterior walls of the building is a common reason for foundation and wall damage to the property. Even the smallest and noticeable damages will result in moisture penetration and mold contamination.
Improper venting
Improper and affected vents can allow outside air to be drawn indoors. Such air brings in moisture and mold spores inside.
Old or poorly done moisture seal
Bathrooms are a place where water is frequently used. Hence it is important the caulking and sealant around sinks, commodes, tubs and showers are done properly and kept up with. Defective caulking will result in moisture penetration into the walls and other hidden areas.
Leaks
Leaks are another common reason for moisture building up and consequent mold contamination. While the plumbing leaks are a common culprit, leaks can also occur from outside rain and air leaking in through some damage in the building. This will result in moisture build up. Some of the common areas for such leak and moisture is around windows, doors, near flashing and unnoticed roof leaks.
